Vitamin B12
What It Is
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is essential for DNA synthesis, nerve function, and red blood cell production. Deficiency causes anemia and irreversible nerve damage if left untreated. How It Works
Cofactor for two enzymes: methionine synthase (homocysteine → methionine, linking folate and methylation cycles) and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (odd-chain fatty acid metabolism). Deficiency impairs DNA synthesis (megaloblastic anemia) and myelin maintenance (neurological damage).
