BPC-157
What It Is
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound) is a 15-amino acid peptide derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. It's the most popular healing peptide in the research community for good reason โ the preclinical data on tissue repair is extensive. Unlike most peptides, it's stable in stomach acid, which is unusual and speaks to its robustness. The University of Zagreb has published over 100 studies on it since the 1990s.
How It Works
BPC-157 is a multi-pathway healer. It promotes new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) through the VEGF pathway โ critical because injured tissue needs blood supply to repair. It upregulates growth hormone receptors in tendons, enhances nitric oxide signaling, and promotes cell migration to wound sites. It's not doing one thing well; it's coordinating the entire repair process.
What The Research Shows
Rat studies show accelerated healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and even bones โ the breadth of tissue types it affects is what makes it remarkable.
In gut injury models, BPC-157 healed ulcers and reduced inflammation โ consistent with its origin as a gastric-derived compound.
It promotes angiogenesis and collagen deposition at wound sites โ the two things you need most for structural tissue repair.
Chang et al. (2014) showed it increases growth hormone receptor expression in tendon cells โ meaning it makes tendons more responsive to GH.
