What It Is
EPO (Erythropoietin) is the hormone your kidneys produce to stimulate red blood cell production. More red blood cells = more oxygen-carrying capacity = more endurance and recovery. Recombinant EPO has been used medically since 1989 for anemia. It also has neuroprotective effects that are entirely separate from its blood-building function.
How It Works
EPO binds to its receptor on bone marrow stem cells, preventing them from dying and pushing them to mature into red blood cells. Hematocrit increases by about 3-4% per month at standard doses. Beyond blood, EPO receptors are found in the brain, heart, and blood vessels where EPO provides tissue-protective and anti-inflammatory effects.
