What It Is
MT-1 (afamelanotide) is the selective, FDA-approved version of melanotan. Unlike MT-2 which hits all melanocortin receptors, MT-1 primarily targets MC1R — the tanning receptor. This means you get UV-independent skin darkening without the sexual side effects and appetite changes. It's the only melanocortin peptide with full regulatory approval (EMA 2014, FDA 2019).
How It Works
Selectively activates MC1R on melanocytes, stimulating eumelanin production (dark brown/black protective pigment) via increased tyrosinase activity. The melanin provides genuine UV protection — it absorbs UV radiation and scavenges free radicals. MC1R activation also has anti-inflammatory effects in the skin independent of pigmentation.
