PT-141
What It Is
PT-141 (bremelanotide) is the only compound that works on sexual desire through the brain rather than blood flow. Viagra and Cialis work on plumbing — they increase blood flow to achieve erection but don't affect desire. PT-141 acts on melanocortin-4 receptors in the hypothalamus, the part of your brain that regulates arousal. It works in both men and women. FDA-approved in 2019 for low sexual desire in women.
How It Works
Activates MC4R (melanocortin-4 receptors) in the hypothalamus and limbic system — the brain circuits responsible for sexual desire and arousal. This is fundamentally different from PDE5 inhibitors which only affect vascular smooth muscle. Because it works centrally on desire rather than peripherally on blood flow, it's effective in people who don't respond to Viagra/Cialis.
