SS-31
What It Is
SS-31 (elamipretide) goes directly to the source of aging: your mitochondria. Most antioxidants try to mop up free radicals after they're produced. SS-31 prevents them from being produced in the first place by stabilizing the electron transport chain inside the mitochondria. It accumulates in the inner mitochondrial membrane regardless of how damaged the mitochondria are — which is critical because the most damaged mitochondria need the most help.
How It Works
SS-31 binds to cardiolipin, a special fat molecule only found in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin holds the electron transport chain complexes in the right configuration to produce energy efficiently. When cardiolipin gets damaged (which happens with age and oxidative stress), electron transfer becomes sloppy and produces ROS (free radicals) instead of energy. SS-31 stabilizes cardiolipin and restores efficient energy production.
What The Research Shows
In aged mice, SS-31 restored muscle and cardiac mitochondrial function to near-youthful levels within ONE HOUR of administration.
Clinical trials showed improvements in cardiac function (heart failure) and walking distance (mitochondrial myopathy).
It reduced kidney damage in models of diabetes and ischemia — protecting the most mitochondria-dense organ after the heart.
Unlike traditional antioxidants, SS-31 prevents ROS production at the source rather than scavenging them after the fact.
